ERMA — Beachcomber Camping Resort held its annual “Hero fest weekend” April 19.
Children were captivated by special appearances by McGruff the Crime Dog and demonstrations by the Sheriff’s Department. K-9 unit dogs Jersey, Ollie and Emmy.
K-9 handler Deputy Carty and Jersey, a narcotics dog, demonstrated a mock search for marijuana.
Campers were not disappointed, Jersey found the drugs in less then a minute.
Carty and Deputy Norcross educated the campers about the role of the Sheriff’s Department’s 13 K-9 dogs. Each is trained with an individual task.
The department rescues unwanted dogs from area shelters. Those “second chance dogs” serve the community in a range of areas from tracking to searching for explosives and cadavers.
Staff members from Cape Regional Medical Center attended and provided free blood pressure, glucose and pulse-ox screenings.
Joining the festival were members of Lower Township Police Department, Lower Township Emergency Medical Services, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Erma and Villas Volunteer Fire Departments.
