CLERMONT — Cape May County Republican committee members voted 123-89 on Jan. 30 to have Marie Hayes of Ocean City fill the vacant freeholder seat held by Surrogate M. Susan Sheppard prior to her election.
Hayes will take her oath of office at noon Feb. 1 in the Freeholders’ Meeting Room of the County Administration Building, 4 Moore Road, Court House.
Meeting in the Abbie Holmes House here, the 241 eligible Republican committee members at 5 p.m. unanimously gave their endorsement to Freeholder Director Gerald M. Thornton prior to an election, that used three voting booths from the county Board of Elections to select between Stig Blomkvest of Lower Township and Hayes.
Voting took about a half hour, and results were announced shortly before 7 p.m.
Hayes retired from the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office. She told the committee that she had driven on every road in the county.

Swearing-In of Cape May County’s New Freeholder

CREST HAVEN – Freeholder Director Gerald M. Thornton announced that a special meeting of the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders will take place at noon on Friday, Feb. 1, 2013.
The purpose of the meeting is to swear-in Marie Hayes who will fill the unexpired term of Cape May County Surrogate M. Susan Sheppard who resigned as freeholder prior to taking the Oath of Surrogate on December 31, 2012. Marie Hayes will serve as Freeholder on the Board of Chosen Freeholders until December 31, 2013.
The special meeting will be held in the Freeholders’ Meeting Room at the County Administration Building located at 4 Moore Road in Cape May Court House (Exit 11 off the Garden State Parkway).
