Local artists, Janet Payne and Paige Cunningham will host a “Haiti House” making workshop at the Cape May Winery on Sunday, March 28 from 1-4 p.m. in conjunction with the Winery’s Girlfriends Getaway Weekend, which is being held both days from 12-5 p.m.
The Winery is located at 711 Townbank Road in North Cape May (609) 884-1169. There will be finished pins available for a $5 donation with all the money going to earthquake relief in Haiti.
“The little houses, made by coloring scraps of mat board with permanent markers, can look like houses with doors and windows or just be covered with designs. We have had people make them into birdhouses, beach shacks, garden centers and fish. Once you make one, you get all kinds of ideas for more,” explains Payne.
The pins are also available at the Nature Center of Cape May, 1600 Delaware Ave., 609-898-8848; Higher Grounds, 479 West Perry Street, 609-884-1131;and Flying Fish Studio, 130 Park Blvd., 609-884-2760.
Local Haiti House organizers, Tina Giaimo, Paige Cunningham and Janet Payne are hoping to raise $1,000 to add to the $159,000.00 already raised nationwide.
The “Haiti Houses” project was started in 2008 by two art teachers, Ann Ayers and Ellen McMillan, of Coconut Creek, Fla.
After the earthquake in January, the project was introduced to the compassionate and creative community via the Internet and hundreds of teachers, students, scout groups, churches and individuals immediately embraced the project and set to work creating “Haiti Houses.”
