SUNSET BEACH – The family of the late Marvin Hume, World War II Navy veteran who died April 24 at age 94 announced via Facebook that it plans to continue the daily sunset flag ceremonies begun 40 years ago. Making the announcement was Hume’s son, Larry.
Those ceremonies use a different flag daily from a veteran’s casket that is provided by the veteran’s family. Signups to have a flag used became available May 1 at 9 a.m. on the Sunset Beach Gifts website.
Evening sunset ceremonies attract large crowds to the western end of Sunset Boulevard, near the remains of the concrete ship SS Atlantus. They have been chronicled by various metropolitan media as well as television networks.
