Effective April 1, Those Who Comment Must Register

RIO GRANDE — Effective April 1, 2009, anyone wishing to comment on a story on the Herald’s Web site must register prior to so doing. This authentication will maintain the writer’s anonymity from the general public, but will permit Herald editors to know who is making comments. The Herald will not disclose user information except as required by law.
This action is being taken to eliminate inappropriate remarks and to ensure that comments remain strictly on topic and do not stray. Those that depart from the topic will be removed.
Free registration is available at the top of the Web site directly under the date and year.Policies and Standards for Comments
1) User Privileges: CapeMayCountyHerald.com reserves the right to revoke users’ privileges and take other necessary steps to ensure the guidelines are followed.
2) Registration Required: Users must “register” with CapeMayCountyHerald.com to post Comments. The Login link appears at the top of Page 1, below the date.
3) Anonymous Comments: This feature is not meant to encourage anonymous Comments, but anonymity is allowed. However, “User Names” appear when readers place Comments in the “Collapsed” setting. In the future, User Names will appear with all Comments. We also encourage writers to include their real names.
4) Prohibited Language: Comments are allowed to encourage an open exchange, and viewpoints objectionable to some users may be encountered. Users, however, are cautioned against posting abusive, disruptive, rude, inflammatory, racist, obscene or inappropriate messages or replies. Participants who engage in these behaviors may lose rights for posting comments.
Users should keep it clean, simple, civil and legal, refraining from personal attacks, “bashing” of commercial products or services, promoting a commercial entity, defamatory or libelous statements, and sexually explicit comments. Hate speech will not be tolerated in any form, including racial, ethnic or religious slurs, references to mental state or status, offensive epithets and exhortations to violence.
5) Complaints: The Herald will not screen comments in advance. If you have a complaint about another person’s conduct, e-mail it to al.c@cmcherald.com.
6) Copyright: Users are asked to refrain from posting any information, images, trademarks or copyrighted material without permission.
7) Advertising: Comments should not promote business or other financial interests. Users are asked not to use comments an advertising platform for their products and/or services.
8) Personal Information: For the safety and security of the online community, CapeMayCountyHerald.com recommends against the sharing of personal information such as telephone numbers and addresses.
9) Use of Comments: Users agree that CapeMayCountyHerald.com may modify, retransmit or delete any Comment at its discretion, and that Comments or portions of Comments can be reprinted by Cape May County Herald.
10) Liability: Users acknowledge that CapeMayCountyHerald.com cannot accept liability for the actions of other participants. Under no circumstances will CapeMayCountyHerald.com accept liability for lost profits, lost data or any type of damages, be they compensatory, special, incidental, indirect, consequential or punitive, claimed as a result of comments posted by users. That applies to claims based on breach of contract, implied warranty, product liability, negligence or other legal theories, even if explicit warnings are provided in advance.
