Dennis Township Roving Reporter

By Ray Rebmann

Dennis Township Committee has hired Diane Weldon to fill a temporary position as a seasonal clerk. She replaces a full-time employee who had resigned. The Dennisville resident will be paid $13 per hour (no benefits) for the part-time position.
Weldon brings prior municipal government experience to her new position, having worked for nearly 20 years as a clerk for the City of Cape May.
The resolution authorizing a new hire did raise a few general questions during the public segment of the meeting from former Mayor Bob Grace, who asked about the duties and training involved in the position.
“She’ll be assigned to Jackie (Jacqueline Justice, municipal clerk),” Committeeman Al DiCicco replied.
“The person she’s replacing was trained (paid training provided) by us,” Grace noted. “Will the new hire need the same paid training?”
DiCicco, who served on a subcommittee that interviewed candidates during the hiring process, noted that with Weldon’s previous experience, she is already familiar with the functions of a local government office. Although she will need cross training on procedures specific to Dennis Township, she should be able to move wherever needed, he said.
“She’ll also help the chief financial officer (Glenn Clarke) and in the tax office,” DiCicco said.

Dennis Township Recreation basketball programs recently honored Coach Leah Sheptock (daughter of Herald columnist Pastor Rudy) after the league championship games. Leah, 25, one of the coaches for the fifth-sixth grade travel team has since departed the area to perform missionary service overseas for the Cape May Court House-based Lighthouse Church. She is working in the Dominican Republic. Part of her duties include teaching first grade at the Santiago Christian School.

Meanwhile the sporting life continues at the rec with street and roller hockey registrations scheduled for four dates, the first being Aug. 12 from 3-6 p.m. Other dates are Aug. 20 and 27 and Sept. 4 (same times). Be sure to mark the dates on your calendar and plan to sign up if you intend to play because, I’m told, the rosters fill up fast.
There will be two divisions for each league: grades 2-4 and 5-8 (street hockey) and grades 5-8 and 9-12 (roller).
Cost to register is $50 per player.

Plenty of clothing, books, housewares, and novelty items to select.
Fill a bag for $10 and help the food bank continue its good work in the community.

Some good financial news on the local front. The township recently received a rebate from the Cape May County MUA for its performance in 2012 in the MUA recycling program.
A rebate in the amount of $13,054 has been added to the revenue side of the township books.

Bingo is coming to Bishop McHugh Regional Catholic School on Sept. 20. Township committee approved the one-night license at its last meeting. The school’s PTA will be holding a fundraiser.
At that same meeting committee granted permission for a one-night liquor license for the event, from 5:30-10 p.m. The special permit request must be approved by the state’s Division of Alcohol Beverage Control.
