SOUTH DENNIS — The Dennis Township Recreation Department is hosting an outdoor skating event in honor of Michael Fisher, a 15-year-old boy who unexpectedly passed away in September after collapsing during a roller hockey scrimmage.
Michael’s aunt, Sally Teefy, told the Herald that Fisher was a bright, funny and popular boy who is sorely missed by his family and friends.
“He was an outgoing child with an enormous amount of friends,” Teefy said. “He loved his family, playing sports and life in general.”
Fisher who was born and raised in Dennisville was a sophomore at the county Technical School where he studied in the Allied Medical Program.
“He wanted to be a doctor,” Teefy said.
“In honor of Mike and to assist his family with unexpected funeral expenses and related costs, the Dennis Township hockey community is pulling together to organize a “Skate for Mike” day on Nov. 14,” township recreation coordinator Kimberly Herron, wrote in a letter to the community.
The event is scheduled for Sun., Nov. 14, 1-5 p.m. at the township Recreation Complex, 565 Dennisville Road. It will include outdoor skating (Safety helmets are required for skaters 17 and younger) and DJ music as well as food, cold drinks and hot chocolate for sale. There will also be a bake sale and Chinese auction. Admission is $3.
“To help defray the costs, we are asking for donations as 100 percent of all proceeds will be given to Michael Fisher’s family,” Herron wrote.
The Recreation Department is seeking donations of hamburgers and hotdogs (for up to 500) and items of value for the auction.
“If you wish to give a monetary gift to the family, please make checks payable to the Dennis Township Hockey Association and write Michael Fisher on the memo line,” Herron said. Donations are tax deductible.
“It’s important that we support the family and show how much we care,” Herron said. “We just want to try to make it a little bit easier for them during this difficult time.”
