County GOP Taps Sheppard as Surrogate Candidate

By Al Campbell

ERMA – Cape May County Republican committee people selected Freeholder Vice Director M. Susan Sheppard of Ocean City as their surrogate candidate over two other contenders for the post at their convention at Naval Air Station Wildwood Wed., March 28.
Sheppard, of Ocean City, tallied 102 votes. Dean Marcolongo received 44 votes. Assistant County Counsel James Arsenault garnered 18 votes.
Prior to voting in four electronic voting machines, Sheppard told committee members her reason for seeking the post, which is being vacated by Surrogate W. Robert Hentges after 40 years, longest serving surrogate in the state, was to follow in her late father’s footsteps. He was a judge in Pennsylvania, and the reason she pursued law as a career, she said.
It was his urging and life that she work to help others, especially in the office of surrogate, when citizens have lost loved ones, and must have wills filled and carried out.
Freeholder Leonard Desiderio earned unanimous support of the party to seek his seat again.
U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo garnered 143 votes to outdistance competitor Mike Assad, who received six votes.
State Sen. Joseph M. Kyrillos Jr. (R-13th), of Middletown, seeking the U.S. Senate seat held by Sen. Robert Menendez won unanimous support from the county GOP. Earlier, Kyrillos told the gathering he would make it a point, when elected to the Senate, to frequently visit Cape May County.
