County Announces 2012 National Arts Program® Award Winners

COURT HOUSE – Freeholder M. Susan Sheppard announced that Bill MacQueen, of the Cape May County Zoological Society, won the “Best of Show” award for his work “Marsh” in the Eleventh Annual Exhibit and Awards of The National Arts Program® (NAP) for Cape May County.
Awards were presented at an opening reception on Tue., April 17, at the Middle Township Performing Arts Center (PAC). The exhibit is open to the public and will remain on display at the PAC through May 10, 2012. The free NAP exhibit includes 176 works of art by 125 local artists. It is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the PAC, 1 Penkethman Way, Cape May Court House, at Middle Township High School.
2012 National Arts Award Winners:
Youth 12 and Under: Honorable Mention: Kevan Johnson “Stone Face”, Third Place: Nadia Price “Crazy Cat and Dog”, Second Place: Lily Collier “Birds of Paradise” and First Place: John Gorman “The Painted Castle”
Youth 12-18: Honorable Mention: Zhiair Bland “Mountains and Trees”, Third Place: Stephanie Westerland “Sunflower”, Second Place: Jamie Roth “Self Portrait” and First Place: Sarah Lacy “Window”
Amateur: Honorable Mention: Catherine Elam “Creating Memories”, Third Place: Lorraine Hansen “Meadow”, Second Place: Muriel Iurato “Ye Olde Grist Mill” and First Place: “Budd” Springer “Book A Boat”
Intermediate: Honorable Mention: Jane Tyndall “Dining at Shellbay”, Third Place: Joanne Killian “Walking on Boardwalk”, Second Place: Joanne Bernardini “Going Down” and First Place: Karin Callahan “Eraser”
Professional: Honorable Mention: Anita Roth “Still Life”, Third Place: Betty Campbell “After Glow”, Second Place: Lynda Fellenbaum “March Marshes”, First Place: Susanne Rau “Inside Out”
Best Photograph: Christine Peck “Beached”
Best Craft: Meryl Nelson “Gisele, Frick, Frack and Me”
Best Painting: Bill MacQueen “Marsh”
Best Mixed Media: Carly Crisanti “Comic Relief”
Best Sculpture: Michael Cunningham “Witness to Empire”
Best Works On Paper: Anna Marie Zabielski “The Marsh”
New this year, additional awards were presented to entrants by area businesses and organizations.

The Cape May County Department of Tourism Awards were presented to the following:
Damesah Moody – “Shark”
Michael Owen –“Homachi”
Rosalie Hettanbach – “Pansies”
Peg Dittmar – “Out On A Limb”
William Dietrich received a $50 check donated by Anne Salvatore for his piece “Dream Sequence”. Dr. Janice Lake Betts presented a $150 award in the honor of James Pulvino to Gregory Palm for his work, “The End is Near”.
The Cape May County Chamber of Commerce Awards were presented to:
Zhiair Bland – “Allen Iverson” ($25)
Josh London – “Jive Turkey” ($25)
Riley Kane – “Chinese Bamboo” ($25)
Micha Rucci – “Ceramic Mask” ($25)
Carly Crisanti – “Comic Relief” ($100)
Sturdy Savings Bank donated $200 that was awarded to Pat Wenzel for her work “Art of Barbados”. Atlantic City Electric awarded $200 to Laurie Schiffelbein for her work “Sunset Splash” and $100 to Carol Zerbee for “Jazz at the Point”.
National Arts Program winners in the Adult Category received $300 for first place, $200 for second place and $100 for third place. In the Youth and Teen Categories, the first place winners received $75, the second place winners received $50 and the third place winners received $25. Also, all National award winners received ribbons and each participant received a certificate of participation in The National Arts Program®
