SUNSET BEACH — A Day of Remembrance for Cape May County’s Forgotten Warriors, those who lost their lives in Vietnam, was held Sat., July 24 at Sunset Beach.
The event began at 10 a.m. with a display of military memorabilia from the Vietnam and Korean War eras.
At 7:30 p.m., a sunset flag ceremony was held to honor the 22 fallen Vietnam veterans from Cape May County.
The sponsor of the event was the Forgotten Warriors Vietnam Museum, located at the county airport.
Lower Township Mayor Michael Beck spoke at the ceremony. He noted he returned from a year of duty in Vietnam on July 24, 1967.
Marvin Hume, an 89-year-old World War II veteran, who has hosted a flag lowering ceremony at Sunset Beach for 40 years, lowered the flag along with Tom Collins, Forgotten Warriors Vietnam Museum president.
All of the flags flown during the ceremonies are veterans’ casket flags that have been donated by families. The ceremony included “Taps,” “The Star Spangled Banner” and a recording of Kate Smith’s “God Bless America.”
