WILDWOOD — In a room filled with vintage images of Wildwood by the Sea in earlier times, Anne Vinci, President of Wildwood Historical Society, Inc., on Wed., Sept. 22 accepted a CD copy of “Wildwood, On the Boardwalk in Wildwood,” a song with a copyright in 1947.
Presenting the CD was Dick Powell, featured in a Herald story on Wed., Sept. 8. His wife recently uncovered a copy of the song on sheet music removed from their former Harrison Hotel to their Pennsylvania home in 1975 or 1976.
Also at the George Boyer Historical Museum for the presentation was Al Johnson, whose uncle, Harry Keating, was one of three names on the sheet music, and who had earlier presented a 78-rpm copy of the recording to the museum. Powell had that original remade by a technician who “cleaned it up” eliminating its scratchy sounds from the plastic recording.
Johnson of Rio Grande said his uncle’s music shop was next to the present Sea Theatre on Pacific Avenue.
Also there was Carmen Dee, a well-known orchestra leader.
At this time, it is uncertain what the future may hold for the song, introduced by Louise Ayres. Whose photo graces the sheet music along with an aerial photo of the wide beach and ocean and the famed Boardwalk.
One of the points of concern is who may own or hold the copyright to the song.
Words and music were by Eddie Malle, Al Scottoline and Keating. It was published by Edward Malle Music Company.
