CARA Displays T-shirts to Bring Awareness to Domestic Violence

By Erin Haskell

COURT HOUSE- In observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Coalition Against Rape and Abuse (CARA) has set up a display on the second floor of Atlantic Cape Community College to bring attention to this very serious issue.
The display includes t-shirts featuring art created by clients of CARA and their children, as well as a table with brochures explaining domestic violence, what people should be aware of, and how victims of domestic abuse can get help and support. A mannequin, whom CARA has named “Sarah,” stands by the table, her arm in a sling, her wrist and eye bandaged, her shirt bearing phrases of verbal abuse. “Sarah” represents the victims of domestic violence but also the importance of becoming knowledgeable about the issue.
“We all know that domestic violence statistics are climbing,” said Juanita Battle, supervisor of services at CARA. “It’s important to know that this happens every day, and women need to be aware of that.”
This is the fourth year that CARA has displayed t-shirts at Atlantic Cape Community College.
“It’s a very good place to put them,” said Battle. “Students need to be aware of sexual assault and domestic abuse.”
The display can be viewed throughout the month of October on Mondays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Along with the display, Atlantic Cape Community College and CARA will be hosting a vigil on Oct. 16 at 6:00 p.m., outside in the college courtyard, to honor survivors of domestic violence. The vigil will be open to members of the public.
