COURT HOUSE — Cape Christian Academy students in 1st through 5th grades got an early Christmas present Dec. 23, when Sam Barks, proprietor of Sam’s Transmission in Court House, donated seven new bicycles to students of low-income families who either didn’t have a bike or had an old bike they had outgrown.
“They were definitely appreciative,” teacher Naomi Lonergan told the Herald.
Bikes were presented to the kids on the last day of school before their holiday break.
Bike recipients were selected on a financial need basis. Barks said he wanted to do something nice for families that are experiencing hard times due to the economy. He said he didn’t have a lot of toys as a child and he wanted to help underprivileged kids.
“It was a real blessing for these children to get a new bike for Christmas,” school administrator John Spriggs wrote in a thank you letter to Barks.
“I know all of their parents were also blessed to know that someone else thought of their children. Even though we are a private Christian school, some parents still struggle to make ends meet.”
Names of the recipient families have been protected for privacy.
