SEA ISLE CITY – Twenty-three new lifeguards, who recently completed “Rookie School” with the Sea Isle City Beach Patrol, are now working on lifeguard stands up and down the resort’s shoreline. They range in age from 16 to 33 – and each is a valued addition to the Beach Patrol’s roster.
According to Lt. Dave Stearne, a long-time member of the SICBP, this year’s group of rookies is very impressive. Not only is he confident that they will make fine lifeguards, he also anticipates that several will be contenders during future lifeguard races.
“This is an incredibly talented group of applicants,” said Stearne, who organizes the SICBP’s Rookie School and trains new recruits. “There are several strong swimmers and surf dashers, in particular, who will immediately help us on both the men’s and women’s competition teams.”
“Twenty-three is a fairly large rookie class for us,” added Stearne, who is also a professor of Biomechanics at West Chester University. “This year, there are ten females, which is the largest number of females we’ve ever had in a rookie class, and there are ten full-time residents from Sea Isle City or other communities here in Cape May County.”
The new lifeguards who successfully completed the SICBP’s 2014 Rookie School are Natalie Alleva, 17, of Southampton, NJ; David Allison, 33, of Ocean City, NJ; Gabrielle Breazeale, 16, of Seaville; NJ, Kim Corcorcan, 18, of Belle Mead, NJ; Katelin Cordero, 16, of Lansdale, PA; Alex Cranch, 20, Glenside, PA; Nicholas Dagrosa, 17, of Seaville, NJ; Jesse Fallon, 20, of Wyndmoor, PA; William “Billy” Gormley, 17, of Havertown, PA; Sean Kelly, 18, of Marmora, NJ; Sean-Shamus Killion, 17, of Philadelphia; Eric Lam, 17, of Ocean City, NJ; Roman LaRosa, 16, of Sea Isle City, NJ; Sofiya Lebedeva, 17, of Ocean City, NJ; Abby Lyons, 18, of Ocean City, NJ; Joseph McErlean, 20, of Phoenixville, PA; Colby McGuigan, 17, of Ocean City, NJ; Alex Mesisca, 19, of Medford, NJ; Kristi Rohrer, 17, of Seaville, NJ; Morgan Sanguinetti, 18, of Robbinsville, NJ; Steve Santry, 19, of Lower Moreland, PA; Rachel Stremme, 17, of Seaville, NJ; and Kristen Walheim, 20, of Malvern, PA.
A number of the 2014 rookies are also past participants of the SICBP’s Junior Lifeguard Program, which introduces basic lifesaving skills and rescue techniques as an educational and physical training foundation for prospective beach patrol employees. As is the case with Rookie School, the SICBP’s Junior Lifeguard Program trains guards for the future – all the while building skills that could one day save lives.
