Undergraduate students who have been graded in a minimum of 12 credits counting toward their GPA for the semester and who have earned a minimum 3.33 GPA for a given semester are honored with Dean’s List recognition for that semester.

Olivia J. Gillespie of Woodbine was among the members of The University of Scranton’s undergraduate class of 2016 honored for academic excellence, service or both at commencement.
Gillespie was one of five Scranton students to be awarded a prestigious Fulbright Award as part of the U.S. Student Program. She also received the Prof. Joseph B. Cullather Award for Excellence in English (ex aequo). She graduated magna cum laude with a major in English literature and double minors in Spanish and theology/religious studies. She was a member of the Sigma Tau Delta honor society and “Who’s Who Among Students.” A semi-finalist for the Elie Wiesel National Ethics Essay Contest, she won the University’s 2014 Berrier Prose Award for fiction writing. She received a 2015 President’s Fellowship for Summer Research from the University, through which she produced several short stories. She served as the editor-in-chief of Esprit, the University’s literary journal. During January 2016, she studied abroad in Puebla, Mexico.
As the recipient of a 2016 Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Brazil, Gillespie will spend a year teaching English language to students at a Brazilian University, who are studying to become English teachers themselves.
Gillespie is a graduate of Ocean City High School.

Olivia Gillespie of Woodbine was among 1,600 students named to The University of Scranton Dean’s List, which recognizes students for academic excellence during the 2016 spring semester. A student must have a grade point average of 3.5 or better with a minimum number of credit hours during the spring semester to make the Dean’s List.
Gillespie is a senior English major in the University’s College of Arts and Sciences.

U.S. Air Force Airman Patrick M. McKelvey graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio.
The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.
Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
He is a 2011 graduate of Lower Cape May Regional High School.

David Prosser of Villas is helping to guard the Adirondack Park against the spread of invasive species this summer.
Prosser, a student at Paul Smith’s College, is a steward for the Adirondack Watershed Institute. Paul Smith’s College-led initiative protects rivers, lakes and other waterways against invasive species and teaches boaters how to keep an eye out for problems on their own.
Prosser and the 71 other watershed stewards attended a training session at Paul Smith’s College in May before starting their duties. While stationed at boat launches across the Adirondacks, the stewards will conduct inspections of boats entering and leaving the water and operate boat-washing stations. They’ll remove any invasive species that they find and convey the importance of clean boats, clean gear and clean waters to boaters.

Casey Cattie, an Ocean City native, traveled to Ireland this summer as part of Belmont University’s largest group of student travelers in university history. With more than 500 students participating, 22 programs were held in May and 9 programs are currently underway as students embark on adventures in nearly 30 countries including South Africa, Ireland, China, Austria, Greece and Argentina, among others.

Andre Kristofer Pattantyus, a summer resident of Avalon, received his PhD in the Science of Meteorology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. “Estimating sulfur dioxide to sulfur aerosol conversion rates in Hawaii” is the title of his doctoral dissertation. After receiving his M.S. in meteorology at the Florida Institute of Technology, he transferred to UHM to continue his scientific research and education. On May 14, his family and friends celebrated this momentous event in Hawaii. Dr. Pattantyus and his family moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico for persuing his scientific career at a federal research center.

Emily Meachon ’16 of Ocean City was presented with the Belle K. Ribicoff Prize, which is awarded for academic excellence, at the University of Hartford’s Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony May 15.
In the fall, Meachon will begin studies for a Master of Science in Psychological Research at the University of Oxford, after which she plans to earn a PhD in psychology and enter a career in academia.
