AVALON — Residents and visitors gathered at Veteran’s Plaza here Monday on a lovely summer evening to pay tribute to veterans, and to honor 1st Lt. Travis Manion, USMC, who was killed by a sniper in Al Anbar, Iraq, on April 29.
Manion is a resident of Doylestown, Pa. who spent summers in Avalon.
Members of Manion’s family were on hand to accept a flag flown on Memorial Day from the borough. The flag was presented by Mayor Martin L. Pagliughi to Manion’s sister, Ryan Borek.
Also on hand were members of borough council and Sen. Nicholas Asselta (R-1st) , who addressed the crowd after the flag presentation. Presenting the colors were members of the Ceremonial Color Guard of the Dramis Detachment of the Marine Corps League, and the Stephan C. Ludlam Post 331 of the American Legion.
The Avalon Brass Camp Faculty Brass Quintet played “The Star Spangled Banner” and singing of the National Anthem was led by the 7-Mile Island Singers, led by Gen. Jack Stoner, musical director. Also part of the musical program were a number of patriotic and popular songs, including Battle Hymn of the Republic, Semper Fidelis and the Suite from West Side Story.
