9-1-1 Call Saves Drowning Tot

By Herald Staff

WHITESBORO — A quick-thinking 17-year-old and her 11-month-old sister will probably never forget Valentine’s Day 2008.
On Feb. 14 at about 8:33 p.m., Middle Township police received a 9-1-1 call from the East Wiley Street residence that her 11-month-old sister she was tending was not breathing due to possible drowning in the bathtub.
The hysterical caller had contacted Middle Township Senior Communications Operator Jennifer Graham who, according to a release, “immediately gathered the needed information, dispatched patrol officers, Middle Township Rescue and paramedics to the home.”
Graham kept the caller on the line for over six minutes and calmed the teen, gathered patient information and relayed lifesaving information to her.
Police officers Leonard Larkin and Gino Castellano arrived at the home less than four minutes from the initial call.
They found the child still not breathing, with a possible airway obstruction.
Larkin was able to get the child to breathe after conducting clearing of her airway.
Revived, the child was conscious, alert and crying when she was transported to Cape Regional Medical Center for an evaluation.
Investigation revealed that the sister had given the child a bath and the tub was draining. The tub apparently stopped draining, possibly due to toys clogging the drain.
The child had wandered back into the bathroom and gotten into the tub.
