COURT HOUSE — Rabbits panted. Pigs rested. Horses trotted in the heat. Ducklings ate.
All the while, dedicated Cape May County 4-H members endured the 90-plus degree temperature and dust at the 4-H Fair grounds on Court House-South Dennis Road.
It was the last of the three-day fair that draws members, families, neighbors and tourists to see the exhibits and merchants who support the local youth organization.
This was, after all, the third week in July, and the heat was enough to help corn ripen and tomatoes get their Jersey Fresh taste and texture.
Everyone at the fair agreed, the heat was better then rain that pelted the fair in some past years, although they wished for some dampening of the dust.
The Saturday night events, including the Cavalcade of Winners, scheduled to begin at 8 p.m., will conclude the fair, but before then many hungry diners will taste the freshly barbecued chicken and all the fixings, put together by volunteers and enjoyed under the shade of tall trees in the midst of the fairgrounds.
