COURT HOUSE – Check out these upcoming events at the Cape May County Library!
Operatic Lectures:
The Cape May County Library invites the public to attend “Operatic Adventures” presented by Koren Cowgill. This four week course will be held on Thursdays at 7 p.m. beginning May 3. The program will take place at the Main Branch Library located at 30 W. Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House.
Operatic Adventures is a narrative told through time that will begin with Mozart’s Don Giovanni (1787) and end with Stravinsky’s The Rakes Progress (1951). Throughout the course, discussion will be encouraged as Cowgill introduces great operatic composers to the audience, such as Weber, Berlioz, Mussorgsky and many more. Do not miss this opportunity to learn about these classical composers and the contributions they made to opera.
Koren Cowgill received her doctorate from the Eastman School of Music and her Master of Music from Yale. Cowgill has had performances of her original music by American orchestras, is also a mezzo-soprano and performs locally in different venues as a soloist of operatic music. She teaches private voice, music composition, piano and gives lectures locally on classical voice training and music history/theory.

Pastel Painting Workshop:
The Cape May County Library invites the public to attend “Pastel Painting I” instructed by Margret Heuges. Pastel Painting I is a six-week course that will be held on Mondays at 1 p.m. beginning on May 7 at the Lower Branch Library located at 2600 Bayshore Road, Villas.
Using pigments in their purest form, the pastel medium allows a wide range of expression from sketching to a completed composition. This workshop can include all levels of experience.
Margaret Heuges holds a Masters of Fine Arts Degree in Painting from Tyler School of Art of Temple University. Her work is represented in numerous public and private collections including The Insurance Company of North America, Aramark Managed Services and the Delaware Art Museum and also a Signature Artist at the Noyes Museum. Heuges specializes in teaching the adult learner.

Health and Exercise Classes:
The Cape May County Library is pleased to offer new health and exercise classes in May.
These classes will be held weekly at the following libraries:
• Mondays:

Offers Gem Craft Workshop:
The Cape May County Library invites the public to attend the workshop, “Craft a Gemstone Anklet”, instructed by Paige Cunningham at 10 a.m. on Sat., May 12. The program will take place at the Sea Isle Branch Library located at 4800 Central Avenue, Sea Isle City.
Get ready for the summer season by adding to your warm weather wardrobe! Come create a one of a kind gemstone and charm anklet. Please bring jewelry tools to class – crimpers, needle nose and round nose pliers and a cutter.
As a resident of West Cape May, Paige Cunningham has been creating and selling jewelry at local shops and festivals for six years. Cunningham currently works for The Center for Community Arts and The Nature Center of Cape May.

Learn How to Play Bridge:
The Cape May County Library invites the public to “Learn How to Play Bridge” by attending a six-week course instructed by Ron Burczewski. This course will be held at 1 p.m. on Mondays beginning May 7 at the Sea Isle Branch Library located at 4800 Central Avenue, Sea Isle City.
Learn to play the exciting and fascinating game of Contract Bridge which combines skill, chance, social interaction, adventure and mental fitness. The course will focus on the Standard American bridge system and cover all aspects of bidding, scoring, card playing, popular conventions and bridge etiquette, appropriate for all new and beginning players.
Burczewski, a resident of Sea Isle City, is a member of the American Contract Bridge League and has enjoyed playing and teaching Bridge for 40 years.

Aromatherapy Workshop:
The Cape May County Library invites the public to attend the workshop “What You Need to Detox” presented by Kinko Hamilton. The program will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Fri., May 4 at Sea Isle Branch Library located at 4800 Central Avenue, Sea Isle City.
Did you know almost all diseases start from the liver? Over 92% of chemicals used in our life i.e. food, personal care products, etc. are hazardous. Daily detox is essential for your health and aromatherapy is a potent and safe way for a total cleanse. Participants will make and take home a detox blend.
Kinko Hamilton was born and raised in Japan. She is currently a columnist for “Happy Natural Aromatherapy” at www.metronavi.com. Hamilton has taught classes in Margate City, Ocean City and Japan via Skype and webinar.

Watercolor Course:
The Cape May County Library invites the public to attend “Shore Memories in Watercolor” instructed by Diana Heitzman. This six-week course begins on Fri., May 4 at 10:30 a.m. The program will take place at the Sea Isle Branch Library located at 4800 Central Avenue, Sea Isle City.
Bring your own photos of beaches, gardens and landscapes to recreate these scenes in watercolor. The instructor will cover composition, color theory, dry brushing, techniques of sea salt and how to paint wet on wet. Have fun creating watercolor painting inspired by your photos.
Diana Heitzman, former art director and advertising account executive, left the corporate world to pursue her dream of raising a family and painting. Heitzman’s many years of graphic design have given her a strong foundation and innate understanding of nature’s vibrant colors. Diana is a graduate of the Tyler School of Art, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, and also studied advertising at Moore College of Art. She is a member of the Philadelphia Society of Botanical Illustrators, as well as a member of the Center of The Creative Arts.

Paddle Safety Certificate Course:
United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 83 serving Avalon, Sea Isle City, Stone Harbor and the Wildwoods will hold a new boating safety class for paddle craft at the Cape May County Library. The “Paddlesports America” class will take place on Wed., May 2 from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Main Library located at 30 W. Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House.
“Paddlesports America” is an exciting boating safety course designed to attract novice paddle enthusiasts. This four-hour course presents five chapters of safety information.
Topics include:
• Know Your Paddle
• Before You Get Underway
• Operating Your Boat Safely
• The Legal Requirements of Boating
Established by Congress in 1939, the 30,000 members of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary are always ready. Vessel safety checks, harbor patrols, safe boating courses, search and rescue and marine environmental protection are just a few of the services provided by the Auxiliary. Each year, Auxiliary members volunteer more than two million hours benefiting boaters and their families
You must be 12 years of age or older in order to attend this class; certificates will be awarded after completion of course along with a “Whistle-for-Life” (www.whistlesforlife.com). Movie Night:
The Cape May County Library invites the public to attend a viewing of The Ides of March. The program will take place at 6 p.m. on Mon., May 21 at the Main Branch Library located at 30 W. Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House.
The Ides of March is an American political drama that revolves around a fictional presidential candidate, Mike Morris (George Clooney), and his second in command, Stephen Meyers (Ryan Gosling). As Meyer’s ambition rises, he is drawn deeper into the world of dirty politics. A political scandal, that could destroy Morris’s career along with those around him, starts to unfold, and Meyers finds himself in the position to change the events of history.

Lecture on Native Plants and Habitats:
The Cape May County Library invites the public to attend “Native Plants & Habitats” presented by Joe Alvarez. The program will take place at 6 p.m. on Mon., May 14 at the Main Library located at 30 W. Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House.
Most of the natural landscapes of the United States are declining at an alarming rate. These changes include habitat destruction and use of non-native plant species. As a result, the bio-diversity of our life support system has changed to the point of failure. Help curb this alarming trend of habitat and wildlife loss in your life. Come and learn how you and your garden can help save bio-diversity.
Joseph Alvarez has a Bachelor of Science Degree and is a Board Member of the Cape May National Wildlife Refuge.

Landscaping Lecture:
The Cape May County Library will host a lecture on “Landscape Design with Deer Resistant Plants” presented by Bryan Lowe at 7 p.m. on Wed., May 2. The program will take place at the Main Library located at 30 W. Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House.
Learn how to have a beautiful landscape without the deer feeding on your plants. Discover the plants deer don’t like to eat and how to keep deer out of your yard.
Bryan Lowe has an A.A.S. in Landscape Management and Design from the County College of Morris. Lowe is the owner of HortSeminarsNJ a landscaping education and consulting firm.

Safety Demonstration:
The Cape May County Library invites the public to attend a presentation by the county’s Office of Risk Management and Safety at 2 p.m. on Fri., May 4. The program will take place at the Main Library located at 30 W. Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House.
The Office of Risk Management and Safety is dedicated to protecting people, resources and finances. By comparing past occurrence to future possibilities, this office develops innovative ways of controlling losses and stretching public dollars. Through communication, education, training and practice, workplace injuries are reduced, property is protected and financial resources are safeguarded. Director Bill Holmes will discuss chemicals in the home with an emphasis on Clorox and the risks associated with using it.
The County recognizes that accident prevention, productivity and quality of services go hand in hand and that safety is an integral part of all activities. All County employees, regardless of the capacity in which they function, assume a responsibility for safety consciousness. With this effort, the final result is a safe workplace and better service for the public we serve.

Educational Workshop:
The Cape May County Library invites the public to attend “Essential Components of the Individualized Educational Program” presented by the Statewide Parent Advocacy Network at 6 p.m. on Mon., May 7. The program will take place at the Main Library located at 30 W. Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House.
This interactive workshop provides participants with a description of the essential components of an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). As a result of this workshop, participants will be able to read and understand an IEP document, be able to effectively participate in IEP meetings and know how to address IEP concerns/issues in a proactive and positive way. Participants will have an opportunity to review their own IEP document and will be given tools to help them effectively participate in the development of an Individualized Education Plan.
The mission of the Statewide Parent Advocacy Network (SPAN) is to empower and support families and inform and involve professionals and others interested in the healthy development and education of children and youth.

Educational Lecture on the American Flag:
The Cape May County Library invites the public to attend “The Story of Old Glory” presented by Jim Stephen of Historic Cold Spring Village at 7 p.m. on Wed., May 9. The program will take place at the Main Library located at 30 W. Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House.
The Story of Old Glory is an interesting and engaging look at the most famous symbol of the United States, our nation’s flag. The presentation examines three topics: the origins of the flag of the United States and Continental Congressman Francis Hopkinson of New Jersey, the man considered the creator of its design; how a massive 30 foot by 42 foot American flag inspired our national anthem; and Captain William Driver, the man who coined the name “Old Glory”. A series of 3 foot by 5 foot replica historic flags are used to illustrate the presentation. The program is appropriate for both adults and children.
Historic Cold Spring Village is an Early American open-air living history museum. The museum consists of 26 restored antique buildings situated on a 30 acre wooded site where working craftsmen in period clothing portray South Jersey life during the “Age of Homespun”. Also visit the Old Grange Restaurant by Tony Clark, the Country Store, Ice Cream Parlor, Bakery, farm animals with horse and wagon rides and children’s crafts on week days.

Breakfast Cooking Demonstration:
The Cape May County Library invites the public to “Food to Start the Day With and Then Some” presented by Chef John Webersinn. The program will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Tue,, May 8 in the Main Library located at 30 W. Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House.
Chef John will prepare breakfast and brunch items that are sure to put a smile on everybody’s face. Included are recipes for Strata, Quiche, Jambalaya and more. Chef John will share some helpful tips and short cuts, not to mention a couple of great recipes.
As the owner of Time to Dine Personal Chef Services, Chef John provides fresh on-site prepared meals for any occasion and groups from 2 to 200. An honors graduate of the Academy of Culinary Arts at Atlantic Cape Community College, Chef John’s extensive and eclectic culinary skills are a result of his work experiences in diners, country clubs, casinos, and gourmet restaurant.

Boating Safety Course:
The Cape May County Library hosts the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary as they instruct a boating safety course. This two week course will be held on Wednesdays, May 9 and May 16 from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Main Library located at 30 W. Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House.
About Boating Safely includes a wide variety of information. At the class you will learn:
• General information about boats and maintenance
• Information on preparing for safe and enjoyable outings
• Navigation rules and aids to navigation
• Guidelines for operating your boat or PWC safely
• What to do in case of boating emergencies
• State-specific laws and regulations you must follow
In general, this information applies to all recreational watercraft i.e. powerboats, Personal Water Crafts, sailboats and boats which are paddled. Personal Water Craft and Jet Ski operators often have additional laws and restrictions which apply to them. At the completion of the course, you will receive a boating education certificate.
A $45 fee must be paid at the first class. Please make checks payable to U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 8-3. Both classes must be attended to receive the boating education certificate.
