Easter Rising Flag Raising Event Hosted by Local AOH

By Press Release

MARMORA – The Ancient Order of Hibernians, Division #2 of Upper Township, NJ hosted a Centennial Irish “Easter Rising” Flag Raising ceremony to commemorate the historic Irish rebellion of 1916, April 23, 2016, in Marmora.  The event the honored the men and women of Ireland that participated in the Easter Rising rebellion a hundred years ago this week.  The Easter Rising eventually led to the separation of 26 counties of Ireland from Great Britain forming the modern Irish Republic.  The event  started at 5:15 p.m. April 23, 2016, at 15 Lyndhurst Road in Marmora, NJ at the AOH/VFW hall and followed the 4 p.m. Mass at Resurrection Church.
The event included a reading of the Irish Proclamation, a ceremonial flag raising with a bagpiper, live music by the band Jamie and the Quiet Man and a BBQ dinner courtesy of Pork Island BBQ of Atlantic County. Similar ceremonies will be happening throughout the United States and Ireland this week. The public was welcomed and enjoyed the history presentation by the local AOH, Cape May County, Division #2.
The Ancient Order of Hibernians is America’s oldest Irish Catholic Fraternal Organization founded concurrently in the coal-mining region of Pennsylvania and New York City in May, 1836.  The Order can trace its roots back to a series of similar societies that existed in Ireland for more than 300 years.  Today the AOH exists in America, Canada, Ireland, England, Wales and Scotland; however, while the organizations share a common thread, the American AOH is a separate and much larger organization.
The Order has also provided a continuing bridge with Ireland for those who are generations removed from our ancestral homeland.  The AOH sponsors many programs associated with promoting our Irish Heritage such as the IRISH WAY PROGRAM, SCHOLARSHIPS and NATIONAL HISTORY DAY sponsorship.  Cape May County, Division #2 of Upper Township does charity work in Cape May county by supporting churches, food banks, youth sports, and Irish cultural endeavors.
We invite all Catholics of Irish birth or descent to seek admittance to the FINEST Irish Catholic Organization in the World — all we would ask is for you to live our motto of: “Friendship, Unity, and Christian Charity”.
Dia‘s Muire dhuit! (God and Mary be with you).
