SEA ISLE CITY – During an Oct. 29 press conference, Mayor Leonard Desiderio announced that Sea Isle City had joined the N.J. Attorney General’s “Project Medicine Drop” initiative and had installed a permanent Project Medicine Drop Box on the first floor of City Hall.
The box, which resembles a traditional mailbox, is available for any resident who wishes to safely and anonymously dispose of unused or unwanted prescription medications 24-hours a day, seven-days a week.
By using the drop box, residents will ensure that unused prescription drugs – especially addictive opioids – will not fall into the wrong hands.
Cape Assist, an organization that is dedicated to preventing and treating substance abuse and related issues in Cape May County, provided 100 percent of the funding to purchase the drop box.
Linda Romano McGloin, special assistant to the director of the N.J. Attorney General’s Office / Division of Consumer Affairs; Katie Faldetta, executive director and chief executive officer for Cape Assist; Natalia Wilber, community educator for Cape Assist; Kellie Seib, Sea Isle City Municipal Alliance Coordinator; and Dan Tumolo, president of Sea Isle City’s Board of Education were in attendance as were several members of City Council and officers from the Sea Isle City Police Department.
Immediately following the press conference,Desiderio led everyone to the lobby of City Hall for the official unveiling of the medicine drop box, which was immediately put to use by local residents Rocco Santarcangelo, Frank Roach and Diana Perry.
“Getting unused medications disposed of properly is an important factor that protects youth from future drug abuse,” stated Faldetta. “The drop box helps the community remain proactive in the fight against the opioid crisis.”
“The new drop box will be available every day of the year – and it is very easy to access here in City Hall’s lobby,” added Desiderio. “We suggest that people remove the labels and any personal information from their prescription containers before using the drop box.”
