AVALON – The fourth annual Cape May County Community Disabilities Awareness Day Event will be held on Sat., Nov. 10 in the Avalon Community Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Fare Free Transportation will be available for those who reserve by Nov. 8. The event is designed as a day of information, food, music and fun not only for people with disabilities but for all who are interested in the agencies and organizations that serve the citizens of Cape May County.
Admission is free. Refreshments will be provided. The Cape May Dramis Detachment will open the event. The Cape May County String Band will entertain with its special brand of music, so look for some dancing in the aisles. Although Disabilities Awareness Day is being held on a Saturday, Fare Free Transportation will be available to county residents who call to reserve a ride by Thurs., Nov. 8.
This year there will again be available a Kids Corner staffed by the School-Based Youth Services program, with activities to entertain the children so parents can speak with and collect disability-related information from the 50 plus exhibitors expected. These high school volunteers from the County Technical High School, under the direction of Noelle Hiers and Matt Jacobs, will be helping with these activities. Face painting, art projects, and games are some of the activities being planned.
Cape Regional Medical Center’s Parish Nurse Program will be offering free blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar screenings and other health information at the event, the County Health Department will be offering flu shots, and there will be an opportunity to sign up on the Special Needs Registry for Emergency Evacuation help.
Exhibitors will include representatives from local and state service agencies, civic organizations, support groups, and commercial vendors specializing in products and services of particular interest to people with disabilities, their families and caregivers. The theme of the event summarizes its purpose: Opening doors and dialogue . . . so that all are welcome in the Cape May County community.
Also, the winners of the 2012 Outstanding Service Recognition Award will be honored at Disabilities Awareness Day. The purpose of this award is to acknowledge individuals, organizations and/or businesses for their various contributions to improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities living in our county. This year’s Awards are being presented to Carolyn Richards, founder of the Hearing Loss Association of America‘s South Jersey Shore Chapter and to S.W.I.M. Inc.
This community event has been planned by representatives from the County Department of Aging & Disability Services, the CMC Human Services Advisory Council, the ARC of Cape May and several community disabilities advocates.
