DENNISVILLE — Planting trees for wildlife introduces students and youth to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) learning and educates students about sustainability and the role of trees in their environment.
The Dennis Township Environmental Commission is giving local students a unique opportunity for hands-on nature learning—instructions on how to plant trees in order to improve their community and help wildlife by providing food, cover, and places for wildlife to thrive. The commission will also distribute free tree seedlings at the Dennis Township School PTA’s COMMUNITY DAY on Sat., April 9 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Academy Road School in Dennisville. Seedlings are provided as part of the NJ Tree Recovery Campaign.
“Planting a tree is a perfect opportunity for students to learn about the environment and get dirt under their fingernails,” says Patrick Fitzgerald, senior director of community wildlife for the National Wildlife Federation. “A single tree can clean the air and water, provide food for wildlife and humans and serve as shelter. It can serve as a microcosm of a sustainable environment and teach kids a lot about the world they live in.”
The tree give away will teach children about wildlife, science, and ecology through planting and then caring for trees in their communities.
The Dennis Township Environmental Commission will also distribute free seedlings at the Old School House Museum in Dennisville on Saturday, April 16 between 9am-1pm and at OPENING DAY for baseball at the Recreation Center, 10am-3pm at 565 Dennisville Rd., South Dennis.
DTEC, represents the public and its long-term interests as local environmental advocates. Commission Members work towards these goals by: advising the township council and the planning and zoning boards about environmental impacts of proposals for development; advocating for open space preservation; keeping residents informed on environmental matters and ways to help protect the environment; promoting environmental education; working with neighboring commissions and other organizations to meet these goals.
