OCEAN CITY – Ocean City’s relationship to surfing has always been strong. In order to share those stories with our community, the Ocean City Historical Museum will present an exhibit showcasing artifacts from Ocean City’s surf history. The exhibit will be open to the public May 27 through Sept. 10.
From John Carey, an early evangelist of surfing in the 1920s, to the Ocean City Surfing Association in the 1960s, the exhibit will look at the early days of surfing. We will also be exhibiting a wide range of surfboards that will demonstrate the evolution of the sport. The majority of the boards on display are on loan from Ocean City residents. We are very excited about the support we have received from Ocean City’s surf shops, Heritage Surf, Surfers Supply, and 7th Street Surf Shop. Well-known surf collector and historian Bill Simon is serving as our guest curator. Special thank you to Laura Matera for allowing us to exhibit portions of the Matera Surf Collection. Located at the Ocean City Community Center (1735 Simpson Avenue), we have exhibits that share the stories of our community from its beginnings to the more recent past. The Museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday with extended hours on Thursday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
