Family Museum Focuses on Ordinary Folks

Harriett Reardon Bailey

By Johanna Hovik

OCEAN VIEW – Harriet Reardon Bailey’s love of preserving history has paid off as she shares the treasures of her family from earlier times. Reardon Bailey is the founder of the newly-opened Endicott Reardon Family Museum showcasing life in Cape May County in the early 1900s.
The museum holds memorabilia dating from 1887 and showcases everyday living in the county. “There are not famous people you will learn about here; these are the lives of everyday people” Reardon Bailey explained.
The family museum features letters, photographs, detailed diaries and family heirlooms by some of the earliest residents of the northern section of the county.
Strolling through the museum one gets a true idea of what life was like in the 1920s.
Elaborate rooms are staged including a parlor featuring a piano from 1886. Each room showcases antique furniture, clothes, toys, even a full doll collection.
Strolling through the museum, a visitor will find showcases of work and leisure including railroad and farming tools. The museum also includes a replica of a school complete with an apple on the desk. That is because Reardon Bailey and her mother were teachers in Cape May County.
Exhibits will be changing, and the museum is organizing special events throughout the year.
