Culture and Heritage Commission Awards History Regrants

COURT HOUSE – Freeholder M. Susan Sheppard announced that eight local non-profit groups received 2012 history regrants totaling $7,798 from the Cape May County Culture and Heritage Commission. The awards were funded by an operating support grant from the New Jersey Historical Commission.
The groups, their awards and projects include:
• Cape May County Historical and Genealogical Society, $1,200 for reframing samplers for their collection and to restore Civil War era drums dated 1861
• Cape May Film Society, $1,000 to continue their documentary video about Cape May County history, “Colonization and Revolution” with historian Jamie Hand
• Friends of Historic Cold Spring Village, $900 to design and print an educational activity book for children highlighting the buildings, interpreters and crafts of Historic Cold Spring Village
• Greater Cape May Historical Society, $1,000 to update the original storm windows in order to protect the building’s 1730 era collection
• Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum received $1,000 to research, create and display an exhibit titled “The United States Coast Guard Station Cape May, a history from its origins to the present.”
• The Ocean City Historical Museum, $800 to complete the scanning and cataloging of approximately 6,000 original photographs.
All regrant applications are reviewed by a three-member panel from outside of the County that recommends award amounts which are then approved by the Culture and Heritage Commission. Commissioners abstain from voting on any award made to a group that they represent.
The Cape May County Culture and Heritage Commission, an eight-member volunteer group appointed by the Board of Chosen Freeholders includes Joseph Salvatore, M.D., Chair; Mary Stewart, Vice-Chair; Fred Miller, Secretary; Barbara Beitel; Dr. Janice Lake Betts; Lorraine Hansen; David Rodriguez and Anne Salvatore.
The mission of the Cape May County Division of Culture and Heritage is to promote public interest and participation in local and county arts, history and culture; and to support the development of the County’s arts, history and cultural organizations.
