CAPE MAY – Naval Air Station Wildwood (NASW) Aviation Museum, located at the Cape May Airport, recently added an F-16 Fighting Falcon to the museum’s ever expanding collection of aircraft and military memorabilia. On June 1 2012, the unique two-seat F-16 arrived at the museum from Sheppard AFB in Texas where it was used as a training aircraft.
With the help of the Air National Guard’s 177th Fighter Wing based in Egg Harbor New Jersey, the aircraft was cleaned and carefully reassembled this past August. As part of a reciprocal agreement and thank you to the Air Guard, the museum will allow the 177th to return on Dec. 5 to use the F-16 as part of a training exercise. About 20 members of the crash recovery unit will assemble at the museum at 9:00 a.m. Following a safety briefing, the F-16 will be lifted by crane and the team will simulate removal of a disabled aircraft using an inflatable transport system. Members of the 177th should be on site at the museum most of the day.
NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum boasts over 26 aircraft displays as well as exhibits of military memorabilia, engines, photographs, interactive exhibits that allow visitors to discover the science of flight and more. Don’t forget bring your camera!
Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum is located in Historic Hangar #1 at the Cape May Airport, New Jersey. Cape May Airport was formerly Naval Air Station Wildwood, which served as a World War II dive-bomber training center. The museum is dedicated to the 42 airmen who perished while training at Naval Air Station Wildwood between 1943 and 1945.
