WILDWOOD – Every year during the third week of June, Ringer Stadium on the Wildwood Beach is abuzz with mibsters (marble shooters) from all over the country vying for the coveted title of the King and Queen of the National Marbles Tournament.
For the first time in many years, the Cape May County Marbles Tournament will be held. This year’s competition will be at Ringer Stadium in Wildwood (located on Wildwood Avenue and the Beach) May 13, 2017 at 3:30 p.m. (Rain date: May 14, 2017). Children ages 7-14 who are Cape May County residents are eligible to participate. Registration will take place from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. on the day of the tournament. The boy and girl champions will compete in the National Marbles Tournament held June 19-22, 2017.
The official game played at the National Marbes Tournament is “Ringer.” In Ringer, there are 13 target marbles that are placed in the middle of the ring and in the shape of an ‘X’, one target marble in the middle with three on each leg spaced three inches apart on center. The object of Ringer is to be the first mibster to shoot out seven marbles.
The preliminary rounds will be a round-robin competition with games comprised of six innings. (Each player will get six turns against his/her opponent). Whoever shoots out the most marbles wins; in the event of a tie, the players will “lag,” (The two players stand with one foot on the edge of the ring and toss marbles towards the lag line, the closest marble wins). The semi-final and final rounds will be games of Ringer. There will be girls’ and boys’ divisions.
For further information regarding the tournament, contact Jerry Sieber (609 287-1622) or Betty Harshaw (609 827-2082). Demonstrations of marbles shooting techniques and explanation of the game can be arranged.
