COURT HOUSE – Rutgers Cooperative Extension Cape May County will host a farm to table volunteer appreciation breakfast on Oct. 27 at 11:30 a.m. at Willow Creek Winery, 168 Stevens Street in West Cape May. The event was announced at the 2013 Cape May County 4-H Fair after Freeholders Kristine Gabor and Will Morey elected to donate their purchase at the annual 4-H Livestock Auction back to the program to honor volunteers in the Cape May County program.
The breakfast will feature farm-fresh eggs and breakfast meats and will conclude with an educational vineyard and barrel room tour with the winemaker. Tickets are $15.00 per person and are available for purchase at Rutgers Cooperative Extension, Cape May County 355 Courthouse-S. Dennis Road Cape May Courthouse, New Jersey. For additional information, call (609)465-5115 ext 610.
Invited RCE volunteers will enjoy a complimentary ticket to the event. “Extending the invitation to volunteers within all three Rutgers Cooperative Extension program areas; 4-H, Agricultural & Resource Management and Family & Consumer Health Sciences helps knit this community of volunteers together. We look forward to celebrating our volunteer’s contributions to the vitality of agriculture in the garden state” explains County 4-H Agent Julie Karavan. “We are grateful to Freeholders Gabor and Morey as well as Willow Creek Winery for providing this exceptional opportunity and venue for this event.”
Rutgers Cooperative Extension is part of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station (NJAES). Through science-based educational programs, Rutgers Cooperative Extension truly enhances the quality of life for residents of New Jersey and brings the wealth of knowledge of the state university to local communities. RCE in Cape May County is home to three program areas led by Rutgers faculty members Jenny Carleo, Marilou Rochford and Julie Karavan. These program areas are:
Agriculture and Resource Management delivers programs that assist commercial businesses, governmental agencies, agribusinesses and residents with assistance, information, field research, and consultation on various issues related to agriculture, environmental issues, and natural resources management. Integrated Pest Management, the Master Gardener and Environmental Steward Programs, water resource rain barrel and rain garden workshops, pesticide applicator recertification, horticultural therapy and outreach programs, and Extension Bulletins and Fact sheets are some of our most well known and subscribed efforts.
Family and Community Health Sciences (FCHS) helps people stay healthy, enjoy life, be active, and reduce health care costs. Many of today’s health problems–obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer–can be reduced through good nutrition and a healthy life style. FCHS encourages today’s busy families and individuals to learn more and make personal choices to improve health. FCHS combines research and practical advice to improve your health for a better tomorrow.
The 4-H Youth Development Program provides educational outreach programming for youth in grades K-13 (one year out of high school) through 4-H clubs, special interest programs, school enrichment, after school education programs and overnight camping. Regardless of the subject matter – whether it be science, healthy living or citizenship, 4-H uses a learn-by-doing approach to help youth learn responsibility, community awareness and character development. Along with Rutgers faculty and staff, volunteers share their knowledge and time with today’s youth.
