VILLAS – Mahogany Kelly, 12, of Lower Township, a student and football player at Charles W. Sandman Consolidated School, is keeping active in the off-season by doing what she can for residents in Florida who are suffering in the wake of Hurricane Irma.
According to the Key West Citizen, a newspaper that serves the Florida Keys, Kelly and her mother, Cinnamon, delivered 76 school backpacks to the organization Keys Strong.
Keys Strong is a collaboration of civic and charitable organizations in Florida that seeks to create a single voice to advocate for relief services on the Keys in the storm’s aftermath.
The Key West Citizen reported that Mahogany began her quest to support needy Florida residents in the Cape May County area by working with a group of local businesses known as “30 items in 30 days.”
As reported in a Sept. 20 edition of the Herald, the 30-day challenge focused on providing the Florida Keys with various critical supplies including food, personal hygiene items, paper plates, and more.
Those items were donated by local businesses and delivered to designated drop-off points for transport to the affected area.
At the time of her interview with the local media, Mahogany had a particular goal in mind. “I decided I was going to do a video (see below) and show all the kids in my school where all the book bags and stuff went.”
Her mother also cited her daughter’s work with her local clean-up group in the Cape May area known as “Mahogany’s Landed in the Can,” but that this concept expanded to include collecting the backpacks to be shipped to the area of devastation.
