STRATHMERE – Camaraderie between firefighters is no surprise, but when Strathmere volunteer firefighter George Turner met a fellow firefighter while on vacation, something spectacular happened. It was only chance that the two men met, Turner was fishing and just happened to meet the Ocracoke, N.C. firefighter, but destiny took over.
While they talked about their love of firefighting, it quickly became clear that rural areas of North Carolina were in dire need for any fire equipment they could get their hands on. Due to that chance encounter and the frugal spending of Strathmere Fire Company, the local firefighters were able to help by donating much-needed equipment.
Steve Nickelsberg, 10-year volunteer of Strathmere Fire Company, beamed with pride as he explained that Strathmere is one of, if not the only, debt free, local fire company. With only about 20 volunteers, 10 active, the small company shows they are all heart.
Even though they are at the lowest level of tax revenue,  through fundraising and researching grants, they are still able to stay debt-free and help fellow firefighters.
Upon Turner’s return from vacation, the fire company loaded up a truck with older gear including air packs, boots, full turn-out gear, including jackets and pants, and assorted tools.
Turner made the nine-hour trek back to Ocracoke, dropped off the donations and hopped back on the road for the nine-hour ride home.
The donated items will be shared throughout needy fire companies in North Carolina, mostly smaller companies on the mainland which desperately need equipment.
