NORTH CAPE MAY – On Dec. 19, an international organization dedicated to ensuring that girls and women can reach their full potential made a special group of temporarily homeless families in Cape May County especially thankful this Christmas.
The Soroptimist International Club of Cape May County sponsored and funded a special holiday party at the North Cape May Family Promise center to benefit all the mothers and families receiving services at the center this Christmas.
As the party continued, the Family Promise center seemed awash with children, toys, easy chairs, and a comfortable, warm family atmosphere; mayhem might be another word to describe the scene as well.
Family Promise Director Laurie Johnson seemed to be popping up everywhere at the center as over 50 chattering children and families visited with Santa who volunteers at Family Promise every year. Families took photos and received gifts from Santa including gift cards that will surely come in handy while moms and dads look for jobs and permanent housing.
Three 10-month-old little elves by the name of Gavin, Sophuia, and Tristan Loiseau received a special gift of a triple stroller from the Soroptimist Club.
This special gift was gratefully accepted by their mother, Kiersten Huhn. Huhn stated, “I really appreciated the stroller because I have been looking for one for a while.” “This was quite a surprise and such a blessing; I am so grateful to them,” she added. The party continued with special Christmas cookies, a large decorated tree and lots of laughter as Santa took the time to ensure that each child got a chance to speak with him and receive an early gift.
The Soroptimist Club’s mission is to “transform the lives and status of women and girls through education, empowerment, and enabling opportunities,” according to their website. They surely accomplished that mission and more for the folks in need at Family Promise this year.
