Restless Legs Syndrome Awareness Day Is Sept. 23

By Press Release

COURT HOUSE — A special day has been set aside to make the public aware of a condition that is known as “the most common disorder you’ve never heard of.” Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) Awareness Day is Sept. 23.
Lots of people don’t know that the creepy-crawly sensation in their legs is really RLS and 8 to 10 percent of the general population has this ranging from young children to senior citizens. There are over 50 people in Cape May County on the RLS Foundation list. The Foundation was started in 1990, is non-profit, with a common goal to help others cope with RLS through research and to find a cure.
There are RLS support groups throughout the United States and Canada. Here in Cape May County there’s the South Jersey RLS Support Group whose main purpose is to offer support and share RLS information. South Jersey RLS Support Group started in 2008 with meetings at Cape Regional Medical Center in Cape May Court House with informal gatherings to share common medical conditions and create awareness of this disease. Sharing our stories with others in similar situations lets us know that we are not alone.
If you or someone you know has this disease, check the RLS website, www.rls.org, for more information. Interested in attending one of the local meetings, call Dot Quill at 609-465-2879 or Bonnie Kratzer at 609-463-4066.
