OCEAN CITY – The country meets the sand this year at the Ocean City High School after-prom party.
May 20, after the Ocean City High School prom, the party kicks off the 23rd annual after-prom party. Over 700 students are expected to attend this event which takes over the school.
Hallways, gymnasiums, the auditorium, and cafeteria are completely transformed by volunteers.
Amy Holmes, co-coordinator of the event, gushed with excitement when listing all of the events that will make up this year’s party. The theme “Boots and Bling 2017” will come complete with a mechanical bull, three disc jockeys, karaoke, photo booths, live entertainment, inflatables, face painting and much more. Thousands of dollars’ worth of prizes will be given out throughout the night. Some of the prizes include a $1,000 and $500 cash prize, dorm sets, tablets, televisions. An estimated $7,500 worth of prizes will be won, she said.
There will be surprise events that will not only entertain but make memories of a lifetime.
Holmes explained the importance of this event not only for the students but the community as a whole. The after-prom party began 23 years ago after a drunk driver claimed the lives of two students.
From that tragedy, parents vowed to keep the children safe, and the after-prom party was born. This party unites not only students, but there are over 150 volunteers attending the party.
The event wouldn’t be possible without community support. Sponsors making monetary and prize donations enable this party not only to be a success but a community effort.
All prom attendees are expected to attend the after-prom party as well as some students who skip the prom. This free party is open to all Ocean City High School juniors and seniors and their prom dates.
Holmes explained, “This night celebrates the good decision to choose what is best, in hopes the message of celebrating life without the need for drugs and alcohol lasts longer than prom night.”
