Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Group’s Meeting Aug. 15

By Press Release

COURT HOUSE – The next meeting of Rutgers Cooperative Extension Family and Community Health Sciences’ Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Group will be held Aug.15.
The free information session will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m.  at the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County, 355 Courthouse-South Dennis Road, Court House. The building is handicap accessible.
The annual “Back to School Bash” program of the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Group, will include helpful information for grandparents as they prepare for the new school year.
Marilou Rochford, Family and Community Health Sciences educator, stated in a release, “It is important when preparing our children for the first day of school to plan. Children take their cue from who is at home. If you are calm, reassuring, optimistic and supportive, children will feel both confident and competent.”
Special guest speaker, Natalia Wilber, community educator, Cape Assist will give a presentation, to both the grandparents and the grandchildren, on the school environment and what grandparents can do to strengthen the child’s connection to the school.
The presentation will include an activity that grandparents and grandchildren can do together. “This presentation will expand on a presentation given in the spring that taught grandparents about assets and raising protective factors. The new discussion will include the children and focus on creating a strong commitment to school and education,” added Rochford.
Childcare will be provided for the grandchildren.  A light supper will be served at 5:30 p.m. and the program will follow at 6 p.m.
There is no charge for this program, however, advanced registration is required.  Call Marian at (609) 465-5115, ext. “3609”  for information or to register.
Support for this program is provided by freeholders, the county Division of Aging and Disability Services, and Rutgers Cooperative Extension.
