Fun Supplies Sought By Caring Sisters For CARA Children

Alyssa and Hailey Rosenberger hold some donated items for CARA

NORTH CAPE MAY – Two sisters who were inspired by another teen’s efforts are looking for “summer fun items” to be donated to children in 30 families helped by CARA, the Coalition Against Rape and Abuse.
Alyssa Rosenberger, 16, and sister Hailey, 10, want to add “a splash of fun” to the summers of 50 children by providing items such as sun screen, swimmies/floaties, beach toys and goggles.
“We were so inspired seeing the article about the 16-year-old who did the St. Jude’s donation for her 16th birthday,” Alyssa said, referring to Savannah Hayes, who opted to collect items and volunteer for a day at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital instead of having a big Sweet Sixteen party.
“We wanted to do something to help the local community, specifically children. It’s great to be able to give back to the community and help others,” said Alyssa.
With help of their aunt, Johanna Hovik, they have placed donation boxes at the Herald office, 1508 Route 47,  Rio Grande, and Seaville Auto, 3075 Route 9, Seaville.
So far, three boxes of items have been donated according to Hovik. Anyone wanting to send a monetary donation should make the check out to CARA and send it to Hovik at Seaville Auto.
Donations are being accepted through June 10.
“I am very involved with the kids and with them a lot,” Hovik noted. “This is something we can do together. Not only does this donation drive help people, but it bonds us as a family and instills family values and unity.”
CARA Director of Community and Volunteer Relations Nikki Nichols said the drive shows children “that we care about them, and that what has happened is not their fault. It helps give them hope and strength.”
While the school year is ending, Nichols pointed out that “domestic violence and sexual assaults still go on. There is no typical Cape May County family that this happens to; it affects everyone, no matter race, gender, socio-economic status. It doesn’t stop just because it’s summer.”
CARA provides free and confidential counseling, and transitional housing and shelter to men and women who are the victims of rape and abuse. They also have a food bank and law program whereby they will act as a court liaison and possibly provide legal representation.
CARA can be reached at 522-6489 or at their website here.
