DENNISVILLE – Joey Povio, 6, was diagnosed with a rare eye cancer, retinoblastoma in July. His treatment began almost immediately, and Povio has just completed his second round of chemotherapy.
Retinoblastoma is a cancer that starts in the retina, the back part of the eye. It is the most common type of eye cancer in children, according to the American Cancer Society.
According to his parents, Povio will undergo six months of chemo hoping this will stop the growth allowing him to keep his eye. There is only one goal for him, to be cancer free.
Despite his struggle, he stays strong and positive. “I wear my St. Peregrine necklace every day,” he said and takes along his “JoeyStrong” Build-a-Bear during treatments. Peregrine is the patron saint of cancer patients.
Povio explained that he feels mostly good but some days he is sick and very tired but having visitors helps.
The community has jumped into action making #JoeyStrong his motto. T-shirts, bracelets, stickers, and signs have been made and waved proudly giving him the moral support to stay strong and remind him that he is not alone.
The Povio family are in complete awe; even strangers are getting involved to help and support the family. “Our community has been amazing” explains his mother Chrissy as she lists all the ways people have stepped up and helped, from raising money with events such as bake sales, boot camp classes, and upcoming benefits.
The Povios have medical insurance, but not all of the treatments are covered, so the funds being raised go to medical and travel expenses for Povio’s treatments.
Since the diagnosis and treatments are so recent, medical expenses are unknown at this time.
Not only has the community organized events but offer everyday assistance, from cooking, household chores and helping with their older son Vinnie, 11.
With both mom and dad Vince working, the help could not be more needed. The boys will soon be starting school, Joey starting first grade and Vinnie sixth, both attend Dennis Township School District.
When asking their mother about the impact of community support, “Thank you, thank you, thank you. There are really no words to express our gratitude” she stated.
“We are so lucky to live in this community; it is comforting to know we are not fighting this battle alone, and that Joey is so loved.”
Povio gathered with friends, family, and supporters Aug. 20 for a ‘Jumpin for Joey’ event. When asked how he felt seeing the community join he stated “Happy and loved.”
