OCEAN CITY — The Sustainable Jersey Hub of Atlantic Cape May Counties is offering a free workshop on communication strategies on Thurs., May 11 from 6-8 p.m. at the Ocean City Library, Ocean City Free Public Library Lecture Hall, 1735 Simpson Ave., Ocean City, NJ.
Dr. Mary Nikola, Director of Organization & Leadership Development for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences at Rutgers University will share her insight on using key skills and best practices that can help citizen volunteers get heard, and turn challenges into opportunities for collaboration.
The Sustainable Jersey Hub of Atlantic Cape May Counties is a partnership between area green teams and Sustainable Jersey. The Hub offers workshops and networking events like this one to provides opportunities for municipalities and volunteers to learn, share resources and to make connections on their path to sustainability.
”While the Hub is designed to support the work of Green Teams, a lot of the information that is shared at Hub events has much broader applications, and we hope that other volunteers and community members will take advantage of the opportunity to come to this event,” Amy Menzel, a volunteer for the Hammonton Green Committee offered. “Dr. Nikola will share strategies relevant for anyone who has encountered resistance or anticipates opposition when presenting an idea or project. The leadership and communications skills she shares can just as easily be applied to a conflict with a neighbor, or to finding a better way to communicate with a friend or relative you don’t see eye to eye with.”
While communicating in challenging situations and influencing decision makers are skills that everyone can use and benefit from, the Hub group felt this topic to be very relevant for Green Team members based on feedback received at other events. Some team member expressed frustration when encountering apprehension, a lack of support, or opposition to suggestions.
Municipal officials and employees can benefit from volunteer assistance from Green Team members to accomplish actions that make their communities safer, greener and stronger. Without the buy-in and pubic support from the municipal leaders, Green Teams can “hit a wall”, unable to move ahead with initiatives. The May 11 presentation will address how to deal with these types of challenges in a positive way.
There is no cost to attend, but registration is required. The Hub invites local residents to get inspired, network, ask questions and get involved with initiatives in their communities.
