STRATHMERE – Coast Guard rescued four boogie boarders who were swept out to sea off the coast of Strathmere Aug. 10.
Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay watchstanders received a report from a good Samaritan of four women who were swept out to sea off Corson’s Inlet near Strathmere at 7:26 p.m.
Coast Guard watchstanders diverted two Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City MH-65 Dolphin helicopter air crews from training flights to respond.
Two nearby good Samaritans in a canoe attempted to help the distressed boogie boarders, but in the process were capsized.
The two good Samaritans, who were wearing life jackets, swam to shore.
Air Station Atlantic City air crews on-scene lowered a rescue swimmer and four life jackets to the water to assist.
The air crew hoisted two people and transported them to Corson’s Inlet State Park and returned to hoist the remaining last two boogie boarders and the rescue swimmer, who were also transported to the park.
“Thanks to some good Samaritans on shore we were able to be notified in a timely manner before dark and effect a rescue,” stated Lt. Alex Webber, the pilot on the case, in a release. “It is important to know your limits when enjoying the ocean and stop your activity well before you fatigue and before it turns dark.”
No injuries or pollution were reported.
