WASHINGTON, DC — On March 11, the U.S. Coast Guard signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP) to enhance the service’s overall recruiting strategy by optimizing outreach and engagement efforts.
The Coast Guard is committed to promoting lasting relationships with professional development and mentoring organizations such as OBAP that share common goals of encouragement and advancement of minorities in aviation careers.
Through this agreement, OBAP will promote the Coast Guard as a workplace of choice, especially for jobs within the Coast Guard’s aviation program. More importantly, OBAP will help the Coast Guard educate students and parents on education opportunities, such as the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, the College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative (CSPI) (Scholarship Program), and the CSPI-Student Loan Repayment Program (CSPI-SLRP).
“The Coast Guard has been and will continue to be a major and active supporter of increasing outreach to youth across the nation, including focused efforts of reaching underrepresented minorities,” said Rear Adm. Cari B. Thomas, assistant commandant for Human Resources. “Our relationship with OBAP will assist them in their efforts to promote aviation, aerospace education and careers while benefitting the service in its efforts to recruit young men and women who have an interest in these fields.
“What the Coast Guard does is world-class,” said Capt. Karl Minter, chairman of the board for OBAP. “This partnership allows us to bring opportunities to our youth and greater access to education and careers. We look forward to building a long-term strategy with the Coast Guard to develop the next generation of Coasties.”
