CAPE MAY – Coast Guard recruits who evacuated in response to Hurricane Sandy will return to Training Center Cape May OCt. 31 at 3:30 p.m.
Coast Guard recruits and training center staff have been conducting recruit basic training at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, but they will resume the normal training routine after being displaced by the storm. Numerous operational units returned to Training Center Cape May including numerous boats and ships Oct. 30.
Facilities engineers from Training Center Cape May began repairing minor electrical and structural damage to the base’s waterfront in order to prepare it for the return of operational units Monday. More than seven operational units rely the training center’s waterfront facilities to conduct their operations.
More than 300 recruits and staff from Training Center Cape May boarded buses and evacuated to the joint base Saturday afternoon. The recruits lost very little training time because they continued their rigorous training process while at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.
Coast Guard officials had to ensure training continued to meet the personnel demands of the service nationwide.
Training Center Cape May will open to essential personnel Oct. 31 at noon. It will resume normal operations for all military and civilian personnel Nov. 1.
