Project to Protect USCG Training Center from Future Storms

CAPE MAY – CDMSmith was awarded a $4.5 million task order to design-build the reconstruction of existing waterfront at the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May, New Jersey. This is the first of the Coast Guard’s New Jersey Hurricane Sandy task orders under the U.S. Coast Guard’s National Multiple Award Construction Contract.
The 2-year project includes the design and construction of stone revetment consisting of filter fabric, bedding and armor stone. The Coast Guard also awarded two task order options: two sections of anchored steel sheet pile bulkhead. The Coast Guard may award the remaining four option items, including more revetments and a substantial bulkhead, bringing the contract value to $8.3 million.
CDM Smith is teaming with A.R. Henry, a small business waterfront constructor that drove the foundation piles for CDM Smith’s design and construction of the Training Center May in 2011. A. R. Henry will collaborate with CDM Smith’s geotechnical staff to develop a cost-effective solution for waterfront repairs and hardening to protect the Training Center during future major storm events.
Permitting, field investigation, soil borings and topographic survey activities are being scheduled and a design kick-off with the Coast Guard will be held in late July with a goal of starting construction before Jan. 1, 2015. Project implementation will be affected by several endangered species near the Cape May waterfront. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service prohibits in-water and beach revetment work from Jan. 1 until June 1 of each year. Additional restrictions may be imposed near the nesting area of the endangered piping plover.
