Man Injured in Early Morning Diving Accident at Lepor Pits

ERMA — On Sunday morning, at approximately 04:10 hours, the Lower Township Police Communication Center received a 9-1-1 call from a male on a cell phone.
The caller reported that he was calling from the freshwater ponds known as Lepor’s Pits in the township’s Erma section.
The caller stated that his friend hurt his back while swimming at the pits and could no longer feel his legs after diving into shallow water and striking his head.
Patrol Officer Ryan Hansberry responded to the call and located the 28-year-old male victim, who had already been pulled from the water by a group of friends he was swimming with,
The Lower Township Rescue Squad and Paramedics responded to the scene and stabilized the victim, who was then airlifted to the Atlantic City Medical Center where he was admitted into the Intensive Care Unit.
The victim listed his current address as a hotel in the 500 Block of Atlantic Avenue in Wildwood Crest.
The Erma Fire Department also responded to the Cape May County Airport for a Landing Zone Assignment due to the incident.
