Local Red Cross Honored by Coast Guard at Sunset Parade

By Al Campbell

CAPE MAY — Capt. Todd Prestidge, commanding officer of Coast Guard Training Center Cape May presented certificates to two American Red Cross Southern Shore Chapter representatives July 7 for helping recruits through Operation Fireside at Thanksgiving and Christmas. In over 31 years, over 10,000 recruits have been welcomed by area families and organizations on those holidays. Those awards were given at a Sunset Parade on the parade ground.
Nancy Booths received a Certificate of Appreciation and Donna Croskey received a Certificate of Merit.
The event was a highlight of the Fourth of July weekend at the base, and included the entire recruit regiment in companies. It included an inspection of a recruit company, and a performance of arms training, and an inspection by Prestidge and the official party of the recruit company.
At the exact moment of sunset, a cannon was fired, the American Flag was lowered as the national anthem was played.
The next Sunset Parade is planned at the base Aug. 4. The public is welcome to attend this free event.
