Local Non-Profit Submits Donation in Honor of Fallen Coast Guard Recruit

By Press Release

RIO GRANDE – The Cape May County Coast Guard Community Foundation donated $1,000 to the Coast Guard Enlisted Memorial this week in honor of Seaman Recruit Aaron Redd, 21, of Stafford, VA, who died July 6 at Cape Regional Medical Center, five days after collapsing as he completed the 1.5 mile run portion of his initial physical fitness assessment at Coast Guard Training Center Cape May.
“Our community grieves the loss of this young man, who had chosen to dedicate himself to protecting the public through service in the United States Coast Guard,” stated Will Morey, Foundation Chairman. “Recognition on the planned Enlisted Memorial is a fitting honor for Seaman Recruit Redd. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family,” Morey added.
The Coast Guard Enlisted Memorial is a planned project to recognize the over 1,500 Coast Guardsmen who have lost their lives in the performance of duty. Once fundraising is complete, the memorial will be constructed on the grounds of Training Center Cape May, which is the only accession point nationally for Coast Guard recruits and is considered the birthplace of the service’s enlisted corps. Seaman Recruit Redd’s name will be included on the memorial.
Any community members wishing to donate to or learn more about the Enlisted Memorial may visit hwww.cgemf.org.
