Coastie Chiefs Helps Knights Raise the Roof

By Jack Fichter

ERMA — When Knights of Columbus Stella Maris Council. No. 3546 here needed a new roof on their hall, the Cape May Coast Guard Chief’s Association came to their aid.
Under a clear blue sky, members of the chief’s association arrived at 7 a.m. Friday May 7 and began removing old shingles from the Knight’s of Columbus Hall at 324 Breakwater Rd.
By 10 a.m. they had removed 90 percent of the old shingles and were loading flats of new shingles on the roof decking.
Knights of Columbus Home Association President Ramiro Yabor said about 25 members of the chief’s association were working to remove the old roof and install a new one.
The new roof used “77-square” of shingles, he said, with each of the squares of shingles measuring 10-feet by 10-feet.
Yabor said the hall’s roof was old and suffered damage from winter storms. The Knights held fundraising events to help pay for roofing materials.
He said the job would have cost about $25,000 if the Knights had hired a roofing contractor. Yabor said the materials cost $8,500 with the chief’s association providing the labor.
Business sponsors included American Deli, Brushworks Painting, Cape Bank, Sturdy Bank, Evoy Funeral Home and Holy Name Society.
Many individuals also donated to the project, said Yabor.
