Coast Guard Urges Caution at Shore Over July Fourth Weekend

By Press Release

COURT HOUSE — The Coast Guard is urging mariners to take extra caution over the Fourth of July weekend as Hurricane Arthur is expected to pass by the Jersey Shore on Fri.
According to the National Weather Service, the storm is expected to bring dangerous rip currents, heavy surf, wind and tidal flooding to the New Jersey region.
Even as the weather improves after Fri., rip currents will be a major threat throughout the entire weekend.
“Some people may find it exciting to be on the beach during heavy weather,” said Lt. Cmdr. C. K. Moore, the commanding officer of Coast Guard Station Atlantic City. “Even a great, strong swimmer can be knocked down and taken by the powerful waves. It’s not worth risking your life for. Please stay out of the water this weekend.”
If you do find yourself in a rip current, the Coast Guard recommends trying to remain calm to conserve energy and think clearly. Do not fight the current. Swim out of the current in a direction following the shoreline. When out of the current, swim toward shore.
If boaters do decide to go out on the water, they should constantly check conditions on the Coast Guard’s hailing and distress frequency, VHF-FM channel 16, and have a hurricane preparedness safety plan.
