Coast Guard’s First, Only African-American Woman to Serve as Office-in-Charge Afloat Addresses Recruits

CAPE MAY – Chief Petty Officer Malia Chasteen, the Coast Guard’s first and only African-American woman to serve as an officer in charge afloat, talked to recruits at U.S. Coast Guard Training Center Cape May April 10.
She told the recruits of her career experiences as part of the Coast Guard’s Ethridge Initiative.
Her presentaton took place in the Bernard Webber Seamanship building.
The Ethridge Initiative is a diversity initiative to get more minority groups interested in the boatswains mate rating.
