CG Reminds Boaters of Dangerous Ice Conditions on Delaware River

By Press Release

COURT HOUSE – Coast Guard reminds boaters of the dangerous ice conditions on the Delaware River during a time period where portions of the waterway are restricted to steel-hulled vessels due to the ice.
The reminder comes after Sector Delaware Bay received multiple reports of kayaks in the water. The ice on the Delaware River could damage, crush or pierce the hull of vessels that are not strong enough to withstand forceful impact. This danger is compounded by hypothermic water temperatures.
“Boaters should be aware that this is a very dangerous time for recreational boating on the Delaware River,” said Lt. j.g. Kiley Relf, waterways manager at Sector Delaware Bay. “Portions of the river have a restriction in place to only steel-hulled vessels because of the danger large pieces of ice floating in the river pose to other vessels. The current ice conditions create potentially life-threatening situations to boaters.”
The Coast Guard recommends recreational boaters and paddle-sport enthusiasts wait until the ice no longer presents a danger before participating in water activities.
