City of Wildwood Celebrates Greek Independence Day

By Press Release

WILDWOOD – The more than 5,000 miles separating the City of Wildwood from Athens, Greece grew a bit closer on March 22 when city officials, clergy, visitors and residents stood in front of Wildwood’s City Hall to hoist the Greek flag in commemoration of Greek Independence Day.
Celebrated throughout the world, Greek Independence Day marks the beginning of the war for Greek independence from Ottoman rule. This year marks the 193rd celebration of the day.
Throughout Greece towns and villages hold flag parades. In keeping with that tradition, a Greek flag was raised outside Wildwood’s City Hall as children of Greek descent held small blue and white flags.
Noting the children in attendance, Dr. Lester Katsanis said, “These kids are true Americans, but they are proud of their Greek heritage.”
Adults and children sang both the anthems of Greece and the United States.
“These children are very fortunate to understand where they came from and what their ancestors did,” said Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano. “It is a great culture. We are very proud of what you bring to this community.”
Troiano and Commissioner Pete Bryon presented a proclamation to the group declaring March 22 as Greek Independence Day in the City of Wildwood.
“I’d like to thank the City of Wildwood for being very supportive of Greek Independence Day and the Greek community,” said former Cape May County Sheriff James Plousis.
